16 Foundation Tips For Beginners That Will Make Your Face Glow
Written by Beatriz Sanchez
It may seem like a simple part of the overall makeup process, but getting the foundation right is incredibly important. Why?
- Applying it wrong can make you look tired
- And/or older
If you think about it, everything that’s built correctly starts with a foundation, and this also applies to makeup. Without it, your skin may be left looking unpolished and uneven.
However, we know how hard it can be to apply, especially if you’re not familiar with it or if it’s your first time. Not to worry though, as we are here to help.
Lighting is key when it comes to foundation, so if you don’t have good lighting in your room, use a mirror with a LED light. Why is this important? Every other light makes it tricky to see how the makeup looks in real life. Always go with either natural or LED light.
If you’re not sure what your shade is, ask for samples at the store so you can try them in natural lighting. This will help you determine which one looks best on your face.
To find your match, test it on your chest or your jawline-- not your arm or neck. Your neck is the palest part of your body, so matching your shade with this part will do nothing for you. Your inner wrist usually doesn’t carry the same undertones as your face either so your best bet is to test it on your jawline or your chest.

Figure out your skin type so you can narrow down the number of foundations that work with your skin. For dry skin, opt for a light coverage, moisturizing foundation. For oily skin, go with more medium to full coverage.
