Wait until your body is entirely out of the water and roll away from the spot. Do not try to stand up because chances are you’ll break that part of the ice and fall into the water again.

Keeping your weight distributed while you’re close to the hole is key. Once you feel you’re on a stronger piece of ice, stand up slowly and walk away from there as calmly as possible.

Once you’re safe, get out of your wet clothes as they will still be freezing cold. If possible, go inside and stay there until your body goes back to a normal temperature.
