This Black Model Re-Created Some Of The World’s Top Campaigns As A Call For More Diversity
Written by Beatriz Sanchez
Deddeh Howard is a 27-year-old model, medical student and fashion blogger that believes there’s not enough diversity in the fashion world. So, in collaboration with her boyfriend, Raffael Dickreuter, she re-created some of the world’s biggest modelling campaigns, replacing models like:
- Gisele Bündchen
- Kate Moss
- Kendall Jenner
- Gigi Hadid
Their photography series is called ‘Black Mirror’ and it was inspired by the discrimination Deddeh faced as a model. ‘Agencies would often tell me, ‘We like your look but there’s a black girl already.' It shouldn’t be limited to just one black girl: there can be more than one!’ she tells BuzzFeed.
This made her feel very insecure and bad about herself, so she decided to show that models of color are just as beautiful as anyone else, and that there should be more in all campaigns.
Unfortunately, this wasn't a problem she only noticed while modeling. As a young girl, she also noticed there weren’t a lot of women that looked like her.
‘When growing up, I always wondered why the big brands such as Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Guess and many others rarely seem to use black models?’ she wrote on her website.
‘And even if they did, only a very small group made the cut here and there, but that group seemed to remain pretty much identical over a long period of time,’ she added.
She also wrote that stars like Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell and Iman were merely the exceptions that proved the rule.
